REACH
Tuesday, 25 November 2008
REACH - the EC regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals - was enacted in December 2006 and came into force on 1 June 2007. From 1 June 2008, window opened for the pre-registration of substances. It may not immediately have been apparent to many how this legislation would affect the steel industry but it does. ISTA has already held a successful seminar on the implications of REACH - particularly for importing traders - where presentations were made by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Eurofer (the association of European steel producers), Corus and Orgalime (the European Engineering Industries Association).
In addition ISTA has circulated to members copies of UK Steel's guide on REACH as well as Eurofer's position paper on the definition of articles under REACH - effectively establishing that all semi-finished and finished steel products are in fact articles and so do not require registration. The pre-registration window closes on 01 December 2008. Copies of the presentations at the REACH seminar as well as other REACH related documents can be downloaded from our members page.
